Raleigh’s Iconic Circular Tower

Let's Talk Durham

Once threatened with demolition, Raleigh’s iconic circular tower, originally opened in 1969 as the State Capitol Holiday Inn, has found a second life as Hotel Indigo. Rather than erase this distinctive piece of the city’s architectural history, the building was reimagined, preserving its unusual cylindrical design while giving it a new purpose. Today, its High Ground Lounge on the 20th floor offers breathtaking panoramic views of Raleigh and arguably one of the best bar experiences in town. It is a wonderful example of how thoughtful redevelopment can breathe new life into an existing structure without sacrificing its architectural identity. After all, a city’s character is shaped not only by what it builds, but also by what it chooses to preserve.
